I’d like to preface this post, by saying I am not an advocate of drugs. I also feel it is not my business to police other people’s use of alcohol or drugs. It’s not yours either, unless it directly affects you in a negative way. No doubt, the world, especially the U.S. seems to have a drug problem. What to do about it is another matter.
The so called war on drugs, has failed miserably. There is more drug use now, than ever. Think-prohibition. That spawned big crime, speak easy’s and illegal use. To say we’re successful, because our prison population has exploded and there have been more arrests, is ludicrous.
We have more people in U.S. prisons than anywhere else in the world. More than our entire military. We always want to be number one, but for this ? Much of our prison population is there due to drugs and many are for non-violent, petty drug use. What’s wrong with this picture ? What needs to change ? Obviously something.
Politicians are afraid to touch this subject, for fear of not being re-elected. How popular do you think they would be if they became part of the solution ? Think of all the money the U.S. would save on incarceration costs, guards, police, etc. Think of all the billions of profits the U.S. could make on tax revenue, much like we do on cigarettes and alcohol. Think of the huge monetary loss to drug cartels, resulting in far less crime.
Watch this very important video. It might give you a totally different perspective. I think it offers some solutions. What do you think ?

Drug abuse is a problem even in the third world. Our problems of large scale abject poverty, unemployment, disillusionment and bad governance are the rationale of drug abuse here. I think in the West and particularly the US, culture plays a huge contributory role. Young people have role models in the entertainment industry who exhalt drug use. The fast paced life sometimes needs a fun detour and for some, drugs provide that detour. The get-rich-fast mentality has pushed more people to go into peddling and trafficking. People’s need to get high and to experiment, sometimes, inevitably leads to dependance and addiction. An attitude of permisiveness and a liberal media aggravates the situation. However, those affected by drug abuse and related matters are mostly of the lower economic classes. With an unstable economy, unemployment rates rise ergo the lower economic class expands and drug abuse follows suit. The war on drugs should not just focus on apprehending petty drug offenders or netting traffickers and drug lords. Rather, it should have broader focus, one that also involves repairing the economy, creating opportunities for self development for the people on the ground, providing better avenues for solving societal problems and engaging the society in constructive activities.

I’m not sure how my wife found this but we watched it when it first hit the internet a couple of nights ago. It really makes a lot of sense and you caught the flavor of the entire 1 hour video succinctly. I’m very surprised there aren’t any comments. Whether pro or con or on the fence about drug use it should make you think.
