Can’t wait till it’s over

I really can’t wait till this is over. This election is over the top. It seems every 4 years it gets worse. Hundreds of millions of dollars ? That is heinous.

When I think of how many people are in trouble right now, economically, this kind of money being spent infuriates me. Think of it. It could bail out thousands of homeowners, so they could keep their home. It could provide a cushion for several months to those hard-working men and women who have lost their jobs.  Or perhaps that money could help start a new business for those wanting to create one.

It could get the new homeless into apartments and pay their rent for the next year or two, till they get on their feet. It could help single mothers. It could provide small loans to an existing business just on the threads of sinking.

It could feed a lot of mouths here and in other parts of the world. It could buy nets to help prevent malaria in those countries prevalent with it. It could buy polio medicine. It could aid in scientific research. It could help re-build Haiti. It could save animals, now in shelters, by owners who can no longer afford them.

That money could provide college tuition. It could re-build our bridges and roads and this money would pay workers, thus providing new jobs. It could be used to invent new, clean, re-usable energy. It could re-hire those government workers who lost their jobs: teachers, firefighters, police. It could go towards paying off some of the national debt.

You probably have some ideas of your own. Well, the way things have gone, which has been a downward spiral and drastic deterioration of government, there should be limits. There should be a limit on campaign spending. No more than a million dollars so anyone could run. Maybe we’d get someone great who gives a damn.

There should be a limit on how many terms someone could have in office. Just like the president can serve no more than 2 four year terms, so be it for governors, senators and congress men and women.

Then they really might get something accomplished. They might want to leave a legacy and do something good for the people who voted for them. They would be conscious of time and that things need to get done. Nothing would be open-ended. They wouldn’t be guaranteed an automatic paycheck for the next 40 years, or healthcare, which we, don’t have in full. Not really. Certainly not their Cadillac policy. And if Romney gets in, what little Obama was able to pass, will be obliterated. Glad they have such great coverage. On our backs.

After serving so many years, without even paying into a fund, politicians walk away with a sweet pension. What entitlement. They argue how they’ll pay us, the taxpayers, the social security and medicare, which we have been paying for with every paycheck.

We may not get ours, but they’ll surely get theirs. Here are our lawmakers. And therein lies the problem. They make the laws. Do we really think they would consider a change, or even an alteration, when it’s not to their advantage ?

We need a new structure. A new party. Fresh blood in congress and the senate. We need something other than what we have, because what we have is no longer working. The parties are more interested in keeping their power than helping us. And to me, this isn’t much of a democracy or a government that’s for the people. Any suggestions ?

About aboomersvoice

First and foremost, I'm a baby boomer and damn proud of it. The ones reading this post survived. Some didn't..We are the generation that crashed through barriers, broke through the norm and made our own rules. We paved the way for others to follow their bliss. One of the largest breakthroughs was probably equal rights and opportunities for women. Thank you Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan. We burned our bras, well, most of us did. We marched against politics we didn't believe in, staged protests not knowing we could easily be silenced by a bullet, experimented with drugs, meditation and guru's. We traveled with backpacks across the country and throughout the world..We had a voice. We had a choice. We had a mission. We had freedom and we were united. I am a writer, traveler, explorer, observer and participant in life. I am part of the expansion of baby boomers who still believe in the original message of peace and love. Take this journey.with me. Who knows where it will take us next ?
